Hotspot Login Problems: Common Causes and How to Fix Them
Pay-as-you-go and public Wi-Fi hotspots use a login page (often called a "captive portal") to authenticate you before granting internet access. Here's how to fix the most common reasons this fails.
The login page won't appear at all
- Make sure you're connected to the correct Wi-Fi hotspot network name.
- Open a web browser and try to visit any website (e.g. type "example.com") -- most devices need this to trigger the login page to pop up automatically.
- If nothing happens, manually type the hotspot's login address into your browser if you know it, or check for any instructions posted at the hotspot location.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, then reconnect to the hotspot network.
"Invalid voucher" or "incorrect code" errors
- Double-check the voucher code for commonly confused characters (0 vs O, 1 vs I, l).
- Make sure the voucher hasn't already been used or expired.
- Check you're entering the code on the correct hotspot's login page -- codes are usually tied to one specific location/network.
Connected, but no internet after logging in
- Wait 15-30 seconds after logging in before testing -- authentication can take a moment to apply.
- Try loading a different website in case one specific site is temporarily unreachable.
- Disconnect and reconnect to the hotspot Wi-Fi, then log in again.
