How to Crimp an Ethernet Cable: T568A and T568B Colour Codes
Use the same recognised pinout at both ends for a straight-through patch cable. T568A and T568B differ only by the orange and green pair positions; the important practical rule is to match the existing structured-cabling standard and test every finished cable.
Pin order (hold the plug with contacts facing you and the latch away)
T568A, pins 1–8: white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown, brown.
T568B, pins 1–8: white/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, brown.
Crimp and test
- Choose the site standard—T568A or T568B—before cutting cable. For a normal patch lead, use that same standard at both ends.
- Strip only enough outer jacket to prepare the conductors; preserve pair twists as close to the plug as practical.
- Arrange the eight conductors in the selected pin order, trim them evenly, insert them fully into a suitable 8P8C modular plug, and ensure the cable jacket is captured by the strain relief.
- Crimp with the correct tool, then test all eight conductors with a cable tester before putting the lead into service.
- Do not assume an A-to-B crossover is needed for modern equipment. Use it only when the specific equipment/documentation calls for it; many contemporary Ethernet interfaces support automatic crossover.
