MikroTik & Network Setup
Use an XPON Router or ONT in a Hotspot Deployment
“XPON router” can mean very different devices and firmware: an ONT in bridge mode, a routed ONT, or a combined ONT/Wi-Fi gateway. Because VLAN, WAN, and bridge controls vary by model and ISP profile, use this guide to validate the hand-off rather than applying a generic configuration to a live ONT.
Choose a clear ownership boundary
- Decide whether the XPON device only terminates fiber and hands Ethernet to the MikroTik, or whether it also routes/NATs. A MikroTik hotspot design is simplest when the hotspot client network and policy are owned by the MikroTik.
- Confirm the WAN VLAN, PPPoE/DHCP/static-IP requirements, and any locked provisioning profile with the upstream ISP or OLT operator before modifying the ONT.
- Keep management access separate from hotspot-client traffic and record the existing configuration before a change.
- Do not factory-reset an ISP-managed ONT unless its operator has authorized and can restore its provisioning.
Validate the hand-off
- Check optical and registration status using the model-specific ONT/OLT documentation or the operator’s support process.
- Connect the ONT Ethernet hand-off to the intended MikroTik WAN interface and verify internet access before configuring HotSpot.
- If a VLAN is required, validate it with one test client and a documented rollback plan before exposing the hotspot SSID.
- Run the MikroTik hotspot test checklist; if double NAT, captive-portal redirection, DNS, or payment callbacks fail, resolve the boundary design before adding subscribers.
Why this is intentionally vendor-neutral
XPON provisioning differs by OLT vendor, ONT model, firmware, and the upstream operator’s profile. Publish model-specific steps only after they have been verified on that exact model and software version.
